Christian leaders forsaking the faith

Image
by A W Tozer Over the last score of years a quiet revolution has taken place. The whole religious picture has changed. Without denying a single doctrine of the faith, multitudes of Christians have nevertheless forsaken the faith and are as far astray as the Modernists, who were at least honest enough to repudiate the Scriptures before they began to violate them.      Many of our best-known preachers and teachers have developed ventriloquial tongues and can now make their voices come from any direction. They have surrendered the traditional categories of religious thought. For them there is no black or white, there is only gray. Anyone who makes a claim to having "accepted Christ" is admitted at once into the goodly fellowship of the prophets and the glorious company of the apostles regardless of the worldliness of his life or the vagueness of his doctrinal beliefs.      I have listened to certain speakers and have recognized the ingredi...

The Destructive Influence of Psychological Counseling

Image
Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils.” — 1 Timothy:4:1      In my two previous  TBC  articles this year (Mar and Apr '06), I addressed the destructive influence psychological counseling is having on the evangelical church. Simply put, the church has turned from God’s Word to man’s bankrupt theories in attempting to resolve mental, emotional, and behavioral problems. The greater part of the church no longer believes what the Scriptures proclaim: that God, in His Word, has given us “all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue” ( 2 Peter:1:3 ). The results, sadly, are what one might expect: there is often little statistical difference between those who profess to be Christians and those who do not, regarding the number of divorces, the...

IS ALL TRUTH GOD'S TRUTH?

"All Truth Is God's Truth"?* So Says "Christian" Psychology Psychology pretends to be the study of the soul; in fact, it has become known as the cure of souls. But is not the "cure of souls" the domain of the Bible? God is the only One who can take care of man's spiritual problems, and in fact, He has done so. The Bible claims that God has given to the believer "all things that pertain unto life and godliness" (2 Pe. 2:3). We don't need help from Freud , et al. .      "Christian" psychology says that we do need such help, that the Bible doesn't have all the answers we need, that prayer, repentance, being filled with the Holy Spirit, and other Biblical remedies are not enough because there are psychological problems that require something more. Does it not seem a bit odd that God has apparently inspired the likes of Freud, Jung, Maslow, Rogers, et al. , with the "truths" unknown to the apostles and...

PSYCHOLOGY: A BIBLICAL ANALYSIS

Image
by Mel and Gloria Bowers     “And the children of Israel did evil in the sight of the LORD... And they forsook the LORD, and served Baal and Ashtaroth. And the anger of the LORD was hot against Israel, and he delivered them into the hands of spoilers that spoiled them, and he sold them into the hands of their enemies round about, so that they could not any longer stand before their enemies” (Judges 2:11-14).     “God is love” (John 4:8). God is also loving and kind and compassionate (Lam. 3:22-23). But God is, above all and through all, Holy! (1 Pet. 1:15). As His ambassadors in this wicked and perverse generation (Phil. 2:15), He has called us to Holiness  – a reflection of His Holiness  – as well (1 Pet. 1:15). Because He is God and because He is Holy, He had no choice but to “deliver them (His disobedient sons) into the hands of spoilers that spoiled them... so that they could no longer stand before their enemies.” ...

Where Psychology Falls Far and Short

by Martin and Deidre Bobgan Since God has already given unto us "all things that pertain unto life and godliness" (2 Peter 1:3), Christians do not need the psychological wisdom of men. They already have the truth of God. They do not need to seek solutions to life’s problems from the Freudian, Jungian, Adlerian, Rogerian psychologies or any other such counseling psychology. Psychotherapy has greatly distorted and damaged the faith once delivered unto the saints, falling far from Scripture by giving psychological substitutes for the truths of the Gospel. Prior to the Second World War mental health practitioners (psychotherapists) were almost nonexistent. By the early 1960s 14% of the U.S. population had received mental health treatment. Since that time the numbers have increased to over 50% of the American population. One writer said: Probably no single individual has had a more prof...
