The Unpardonable Sin and Perverting The Gospel Of Christ -- dangers of Calvinism
"It will be a dreadful day for the impenitent Gospel despiser when, at the last, he sees for the first time that through all his lifetime God was doing ALL THAT COULD BE DONE to make him happy, and that in all the heaven above, in all the earth below, and in all the universe around, the great and loving heart of the Almighty could find nothing, yea, absolutely NOTHING, to deliver his soul from death, but the blood of the down-trodden Lamb." Having rejected the Saviour of sinners, and "trodden underfoot the Son of God," he has "done despite to the Spirit of Grace," "blasphemed the Holy Ghost," and committed the unpardonable sin;¡ (Matt. 12:31-32) "for there is none other Name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved." Act 4:12.
"BUT THERE BE SOME THAT TROUBLE YOU,
AND WOULD PERVERT THE GOSPEL OF CHRIST"
If then "God so loved the world," i.e. every man, woman, and child therein, "that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth on Him should not perish, but have everlasting life;" if God strives, the Son strives, and the Holy Ghost strives, to "draw" sinners to Christ through the instrumentality of His Word and of the preaching, prayers, and efforts of His believing people, on condition that they proclaim the good news of God's love, NOT TO THE ELECT ONLY, FOR THEY ALREADY KNOW IT, but to every individual unbeliever whom they address, by lifting up Christ as "evidently crucified" for each and every one of them; how dreadful is that statement, how tremendous the responsibility of those who "pervert the gospel of Christ," and preach "another gospel;" who "limit the Holy One of Israel," and "hinder the gospel of Christ;" who by their doctrine cause "the weak brother to perish for whom Christ died," and thus "sin against Christ;" by preaching and teaching, in utter contradiction to all that God Himself has said, that God, instead of loving all, only loves some; that Christ, instead of dying for all, only died for some; that the Holy Ghost, instead of striving with all, only strives with some; and that the great majority of mankind were created by a God of infinite love, for the sole purpose of being swept by His "sovereignty" into an eternity of misery and woe.
May the Lord plead His own cause with all such preachers and teachers of His loving Gospel; may He show them how fearfully, though perhaps unwittingly, they are doing the devil's work instead of God's, by upholding the tremendous lie which would limit to a few that "unspeakable" love, mercy, and grace of God which He Himself declares embraces every guilty child of Adam's race.
May He enable them to throw aside all the systematic theology and theories of man, which are built upon false and unscriptural foundations, and taking the Scriptures of Truth only as their guide, to plead by His Spirit's power with the hearts of others; to bring home to each and every one of them the fact that by refusing to believe God's good news to them, they are "resisting the Holy Ghost"...
