What Happened To Sodom And Gomorrha

 

We're not talking here about personal opinions or prejudices, but about what God says, and for that reason there are abundant Scripture references.

The term “sodomite” is originates in the Bible, and is taken from the city of Sodom (Genesis 19:1-26). The definition of sodomite refers to anyone who actively engages in homosexual or lesbian acts. These are some of the many sins of sexual perversion that God condemns: adultery, fornication, incest, rape, bestiality, sodomy, lesbianism.  In Leviticus 18 God gave extensive commandments to Israel about avoiding all kinds of sexual impurity. Curses are pronounced in Leviticus 20:13 and Deuteronomy 27:20-23.

Some would say, that was the Old Testament Law and is no longer applicable. However, in the New Testament – in the age of grace – we still read God’s inspired words: “Do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived. Neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor homosexuals, nor sodomites, nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners will inherit the kingdom of God” (1 Corinthians 6:9-10, NKJV). Near the end of the New Testament, in 2 Peter and Jude, the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrha are said to be an example to the ungodly, i.e. if you practice these sins, although people may not judge you, God will! He has already expressed His stance on the matter, in the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrha.

Revelation 21:8 and 22:17 declare that the sexually immoral will not enter heaven. The King James Version says "dogs" and "whoremongers". This latter word is the Greek word "pornos" and refers to the sexually immoral. The word "dogs" is a both a reference to those who are unclean - and to male prostitutes.
 

Today's society tolerates almost everything Christianity and the Gospel! However, God, although loving, patient and desiring to save, is nevertheless immutable, and His righteousness and holiness are forever. He loves sinners and desires their salvation. But He immutably hates all sin. He still discerns between right and wrong, and though mankind may change its opinions and laws, God’s Word is clear. He will judge sin.

Holy Scripture Informs Us About Sodom and Gomorrha

Genesis 13:13  
the men of Sodom were wicked and sinners before the LORD exceedingly.

Genesis 18:20-21  
And the LORD said, Because the cry of Sodom and Gomorrah is great, and because their sin is very grievous;  21 I will go down now, and see whether they have done altogether according to the cry of it, which is come unto me; and if not, I will know.

Genesis 19:4-5   
...the men of the city, even the men of Sodom, compassed the house round, both old and young, all the people from every quarter:  5 And they called unto Lot, and said unto him, Where are the men which came in to thee this night? bring them out unto us, that we may know them.

Genesis 19:13   
For we will destroy this place, because the cry of them is waxen great before the face of the LORD; and the LORD hath sent us to destroy it.

Genesis 19:24-29  
Then the LORD rained upon Sodom and upon Gomorrah brimstone and fire from the LORD out of heaven;  25 And he overthrew those cities, and all the plain, and all the inhabitants of the cities, and that which grew upon the ground.  26 But his wife looked back from behind him, and she became a pillar of salt.  27 And Abraham got up early in the morning to the place where he stood before the LORD:  28 And he looked toward Sodom and Gomorrah, and toward all the land of the plain, and beheld, and, lo, the smoke of the country went up as the smoke of a furnace.  29 And it came to pass, when God destroyed the cities of the plain, that God remembered Abraham, and sent Lot out of the midst of the overthrow, when he overthrew the cities in the which Lot dwelt.

Deuteronomy 29:23
[And that] the whole land thereof [is] brimstone, and salt, [and] burning, [that] it is not sown, nor beareth, nor any grass groweth therein, like the overthrow of Sodom, and Gomorrah, Admah, and Zeboim, which the LORD overthrew in his anger, and in his wrath:

Isaiah 13:19
And Babylon, the glory of kingdoms, the beauty of the Chaldees' excellency, shall be as when God overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah.

Jeremiah 49:18
As in the overthrow of Sodom and Gomorrah and the neighbour [cities] thereof, saith the LORD, no man shall abide there, neither shall a son of man dwell in it.

Jeremiah 50:40
As God overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah and the neighbour [cities] thereof, saith the LORD; [so] shall no man abide there, neither shall any son of man dwell therein.

Matthew 10:15
Verily I say unto you, It shall be more tolerable for the land of Sodom and Gomorrha in the day of judgment, than for that city.

Luke 17:29
But the same day that Lot went out of Sodom it rained fire and brimstone from heaven, and destroyed [them] all.

Romans 1:24-28  
God also gave them up to uncleanness through the lusts of their own hearts, to dishonour their own bodies between themselves:  25 Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator, who is blessed for ever. Amen.  26 For this cause God gave them up unto vile affections: for even their women did change the natural use into that which is against nature:  27 And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another; men with men working that which is unseemly, and receiving in themselves that recompence of their error which was meet.  28 And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not convenient;

2 Peter 2:6   
...turning the cities of Sodom and Gomorrha into ashes condemned them with an overthrow, making them an example unto those that after should live ungodly;

Jude 7-8   
Even as Sodom and Gomorrha, and the cities about them in like manner, giving themselves over to fornication, and going after strange flesh, are set forth for an example, suffering the vengeance of eternal fire.  Likewise also these filthy dreamers defile the flesh, despise dominion, and speak evil of dignities.
